Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between EST and EDT?

EST is Eastern Standard Time at UTC−5:00, used from early November to mid-March. EDT is Eastern Daylight Time at UTC−4:00, used the rest of the year. They are the two halves of the same zone, and this site resolves whichever is actually in force on the date you pick rather than assuming one.

Why do some zones show a numeric offset instead of an abbreviation?

Because they have no widely used abbreviation, or because the obvious one collides with a better-known zone. Bangladesh Standard Time is officially BST, which is also British Summer Time; Taiwan uses CST, which is also China and US Central. In those cases the numeric form is shown, because an honest "+06" beats a familiar abbreviation that means something else.

Which zones never change?

UTC, GMT, IST, JST, KST, SGT, GST and China Standard Time all hold one offset year-round. Conversions between India and any of them are the same on every date, which makes them the simplest corridors to schedule.
